A Brief History of the Italian Community in Fort Collins
The Story of Fort Collins' Italian Community
The Fort Collins Italian Club began with a simple idea: bringing people together to celebrate a shared love for Italian culture. Founded in 2015 by a family from Chicago, the club started as small, intimate gatherings. In those early days, meetings were held just once a month—or sometimes even less often—and usually revolved around delicious food, fine wine, or a classic Italian movie. With just five to seven members, it was a close-knit group united by a passion for all things Italian.
When the pandemic struck in 2020, the club proved its resilience. Members transitioned to virtual gatherings via Zoom, meeting once or twice a month to stay connected and keep the spirit of the club alive. These virtual conversations became a lifeline, offering comfort and camaraderie during a challenging time.
By the summer of 2021, as the world began to reopen, the club returned to in-person meetings with renewed energy. That summer marked an exciting milestone: the launch of the Fort Collins Italian Club’s very first Italian Film Festival. Classic and modern Italian movies were shown at local theaters and even in members’ homes, bringing the magic of Italian cinema to the community.
Later that year, the club introduced weekly conversational meetings, held every Saturday morning at a cozy local coffee shop. These gatherings quickly became the heart of the club, offering members a welcoming space to practice Italian, share stories, and form lasting friendships. At first, the group remained small, with just five to seven people meeting for two hours each week, but their enthusiasm was contagious.
As word spread, the club grew rapidly. Today, the Fort Collins Italian Club welcomes around 25 members every Saturday, creating a vibrant and diverse community. Together, we celebrate Italy’s rich culture, from its language and traditions to its food and wine.
In addition to our weekly meetups, the club hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. From pizza parties and potlucks to Italian music concerts and festive celebrations like Thanksgiving and our end-of-year party, there’s always something to look forward to.
The Fort Collins Italian Club is more than just a group; it’s a family. Whether you’re fluent in Italian or just beginning to explore the language, whether you’re Italian by heritage or simply drawn to the culture, we welcome you with open arms.
